: Replaced my D100 Got it today and took about 400 shots of my sons football game. Put those next to the shots from last week on my Nikon D100 and all I can say is WOW. That was a 2K body in its day and now the D90 stomps all over it in every way. Still getting use to the weight and size difference but if you waited for an upgrade now is the time and this is the camera. Purchase at least a 4GB card. Made the switch to Nikon Well, as of a few weeks ago, I was perfectly happy with my Olympus E-510 camera. It took great photos, and served me well. But being the tech-geek that I am, I was intrigued by the Nikon D90's movie mode. I was looking at possibly getting a HD digicam later this year for those occasional times I wanted to record video (family events, recording golf swings, etc.). But then the D90 was announced, so I waited until I could see it in person. I walked into my local camera shop, and played with the camera for about 20 minutes. I was hooked. The movie mode works as advertised. Yes, it has a 5 minute limit (in HD), but I have yet to find that to be an issue. I'm not claiming that the D90 replaces a dedicated video camera, but for 95% of my video needs, it fits the bill perfectly. But as cool as the movie-mode is on the D90, what really won me over was the better dynamic range of the D90. Don't get me wrong, my Olympus took some great photos, but the Nikon clearly handles bright/dark shots better (maybe due to Active D-lighting?). The camera feels terrific in my hands, has all the necessary features for a DSLR today (live view, dust-removal, VR (in the lenses anyway), etc.), and of course takes great photos. The color saturation is also wonderful (maybe the new CMOS sensor). And versus my previous Olympus setup, Nikon has a substantially larger collection of lenses to choose from. Back to movie mode, again it works as advertised. I filmed a few videos using the 720p setting and a 50mm f1.8 lens, and it turned out pretty cool. You'll have to purchase a separate mini-HDMI to HDMI cable to watch on your HDTV, but once you do, you can watch your videos in high-def. Pretty cool stuff. So, my final thoughts are to NOT buy this camera just because it has a video function. It works and its great, but the real reason to buy this camera is because of the fantastic image quality, ease of use, intuitive controls, and of course, the large array of Nikon gear available. I highly recommend this camera! magnificent product - a big leap forward from my canon xt After reading so many good reviews about this camera, and nikon bodies in general, I decided to switch from canon. I have to say this camera amazes me, and it's light and easy to use, and not expensive. My #1 priority was iso performance, and it delivers: shots at 1600 are beautiful, and at 3200 are really ok. Then the ergonomy, menus and options are top-notch, way better than what you get with canon. It just makes you want to take pictures. About the lens: you want this lens. Ok it's not the sharpest, but the zoom range makes it usable in most conditions, the one you need when you can carry only one lens, or going around a city to take random shots. In terms of sharpness it's really ok, unless you really drill down to the pixel. Last but not least, the VR is a marvel. It's totally silent, yet your shots are sharp down at 1/5 and lower. If you get the package, it's $100 off the lens, and really worth it. the videos: I havent made any yet, having too much fun taking pictures :) Really an awesome camera! I compared it to the nikon d300 and canon 50d and I thing this is the best choice and less expensive!
